On August 26, Hermès Shanghai Maison unveiled its Fall 2026 window displays, themed “Portals: The Passage of Time.” Created in collaboration with Filipino artist duo Isabel & Alfredo Aquilizan, the windows feature surreal miniature houses and gateway landscapes constructed from cardboard boxes—symbols of migration—inviting viewers to journey across time and space, between home and voyage, past and future.

Isabel & Alfredo Aquilizan are a husband-and-wife duo based in Los Baños, Philippines. Their practice spans sculpture, installation, painting, and site-specific work, focusing on experiences of migration and cross-oceanic living. They often collaborate with local communities, using everyday objects and recycled materials to create miniature living spaces that expand the definition of “home” through diverse perspectives.

Cardboard is an unassuming, readily available material. It reflects how people on the move around the world often rely on creativity and community to cope with limited resources. In Filipino culture, the balikbayan box has become a symbol of connection for overseas Filipinos to their homeland. These boxes carry not just goods, but also longing and cultural ties across distances. They travel between home and diaspora, preserving relationships, memories, and a sense of belonging—even when families are separated, they remain connected.

This season's windows also echo the boundless vision of Hermès' 2026 annual theme, “Away from the Self,” leading viewers toward vastness and freedom. Greenery creeps over historic arches; cardboard boxes stack into niches of time; miniature houses float between sea and sky like drifting islands, composing a poem of wandering and dwelling. In the women's window, a model gazes from a surreal garden toward a distant blue sky, while a gravity-defying future city hovers above, its buildings lush with greenery, echoing the natural motifs found in Hermès objects.

In the men's window, a horseshoe arch pierces the historic wall behind the columns, extending the equestrian tradition. A model stands beside a saddle, gazing toward the future skyline. As eyes wander, time flows back and forth, memory and aspiration intertwine, opening a door to imagination for every passerby.
